San Diego International Film Festival: Celebrating International Film and Encouraging Cultural Understanding

For over a century, film has been utilized as a means of conveying messages to audiences. Our team of international programmers and ambassadors provide additional insight into these cinematic works of art.

Ambassador Lisa Lonergan emphasizes, “Foreign film has the ability to let you travel to foreign lands without leaving your seat. You can experience different foods, music, landscape, clothing, all as if you were there. You can be like a fly on the wall in a different culture and maybe see life from the characters point of view. Foreign film has the propensity to teach us acceptance and tolerance. And maybe even take away some of the fear of the unknown.”

Some of the films featured at the 2022 Festival featured a variety of topics interweaving social or political issues, cultural aspects of another country, or showing the universal message of love, family and acceptance. Their themes play a vital role in raising awareness and consciousness on various issues and the dialog creates an inclusive space for people from different backgrounds to engage in discussions and share their perspectives.

International films can be a very immersive experience, taking you to new places that you’ve either dreamed of going to or could never imagine. They utilize various cinematographic techniques to convey deeper meanings beyond the dialogue. The use of non-verbal communication, lighting, setting, filters, angles, and movement enhances the quality of the story and provides audiences with a multi-layered experience. Cinematography can capture subtle internal expressions conveyed by actors through body language and facial expressions, allowing for a more authentic portrayal of emotions. 

Ambassador Jill Moore Sugar adds, “Translating the non-verbal signals, the hidden metaphors, body language and tone, and then uncovering the setting, scenes and sound is the beauty of films originating from around the world.” The beauty of film is all the elements working together to tell a captivating story. Without each element working together the entirety of the story would not be balanced or believable to the audience. Jill analyzes, “Foreign language films offer additional depth to a film by inviting the viewer to uncover all sorts of information beyond just what is being said. In any language, I hope to peel back the layers of the film and look for the clues to the messaging often hidden in the nuance of the collective work.” 

When examining international films, it can be beneficial to shift the focus from what is being said to how it is being communicated. By doing so, a deeper layer of emotion and meaning can be unearthed, leading to a more impactful viewing experience. Nonverbal communication, such as body language and facial expressions, can reveal authentic emotions and truths that may not be explicitly stated in dialogue.
