Three key programs include:
Exploration of Social Impact Issues from Global Filmmakers
Empowerment of Women Storytellers through Filmmaking
Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders with Film, Curriculum & Conversation

Exploration of Social Impact Issues
from Global Filmmakers

  • Last year: 3,200 film submissions from 85 countries.
  • Support unites global filmmakers and audiences to broaden perspectives and effect positive change.
  • Documentary RiverBlue highlighted denim production’s environmental impact.
  • Kimberly Hunt of 10News produced a segment on Tijuana River pollution, amplifying the film’s message locally.
  • FOCUS on Impact Education Program’ extended RiverBlue’s reach to San Diego County high schools, fostering awareness and informed fashion choices.
  • VARIETY magazine featured SDIFF’s efforts against human trafficking and PTSD awareness among service personnel.
  • Festival programming highlights the transformative power of film with panels and celebrations.

Empowerment of Women Storytellers
through Filmmaking

The San Diego International Film Festival recognizes the imperative of not only spotlighting women-led films but also fostering a culture of culture of support and collaboration among women.  Despite notable achievements in the film industry in 2023, women directed only 12% of the top 100 grossing films.

And, of the top 250 grossing films in 2023, women filled the following key positions:
• 18% of the directors
• 30% of the producers
• 17% of the writers
• 21% of the editors
• 7% of cinematographers

Since 2022, the Festival has partnered with the Women’s Museum of California to amplify women’s voices within the film industry.

The partnership’s goal is to champion narratives that shine a spotlight on relevant, groundbreaking, empowering stories of the triumphs and challenges facing women today to inspire young girls and improve women’s lives globally.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
with Film, Curriculum & Conversation

The San Diego International Film Festival’s commitment to education is paramount. Through the ‘FOCUS on Impact Film Series,’ the Festival presents a curated selection of films that delve into complex social issues to San Diego County high schools and colleges with film screenings, teaching guides and pre-recorded conversations with the filmmakers.

Film is a uniquely potent medium, offering viewers a window into the lives of others and allowing for a profound understanding of complex issues. Following their participation in our program, 85% of students reported feeling more empathetic and informed.

Thanks to the support of the Festival Patrons, these screenings are offered to high schools and colleges at no cost.

New Education Program Initiatives

In collaboration with SDUSD, SDCOE, and the San Diego Community College District, the Festival is proud to announce two major extensions of the
FOCUS on Impact Education Program that will grow the reach,
engagement and influence of this program.

  • The Student Art Competition & Exhibit. This initiative will challenge students to create artwork that raises awareness of social issues, showcasing their creativity and critical thinking skills.  Look for the Exhibit at this year’s Festival!
  • Additionally, the ‘FOCUS on Impact Film Library’ will launch in Fall 2024, providing educators with anytime access to a myriad of social issue films, empowering them to integrate these resources into their curricula and foster global perspectives among their students
