FOCUS on Impact
Education Program
Empowering Students
Through powerful films and bold visual art, students explore real-world social issues, share their voices with the community, and engage in thoughtful dialogue.
FOCUS on Impact is a countywide education initiative that brings together teachers in a growing network committed to using storytelling as a catalyst for learning. By providing free access to curated films, classroom-ready curriculum, and a student art competition and exhibit, the program creates meaningful pathways for conversation, creativity, and critical thinking.
This groundbreaking initiative from the San Diego Film Foundation harnesses the transformative power of film and art to broaden perspectives, cultivate empathy, and equip students with the communication skills needed to navigate an increasingly interconnected world.
How it Works:
Students engage through two components that connect storytelling with action: Film + Art
Film + Curriculum + Conversation
Why Film Works. Research shows that storytelling activates the brain’s emotional and memory centers, helping students retain information and connect more deeply to complex topics. Film engages both heart and mind — making lessons not just observed, but experienced.

The Foundation provides teachers with year-round access to the FOCUS on Impact Film Library — a curated collection of short films exploring timely social issues affecting our communities and our world.
Each film is selected from official San Diego International Film Festival programming and is paired with classroom-ready resources designed to spark thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking.
