The San Diego International Film Festival honors some of the industry’s most accomplished actors, directors and filmmakers. Honorees from previous years include: Annette Bening, Judd Apatow, Kate Beckinsale, Alan Arkin, Geena Davis and Adrien Brody.

2016 Honorees

ANNETTE BENING – Gregory Peck Award of Excellence in Cinema, 2016

Annette Bening is a four-time Academy Award® nominee, two-time Golden Globe-winner, and two-time recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Award. She will next be seen on screen in Mike Mills’ 20th CENTURY WOMEN, in Michael Mayer’s adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s play THE SEAGULL, and in Warren Beatty’s RULES DON’T APPLY. In 2011, Bening starred in Focus Features’ critical and commercial sensation THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. Her role as Nic earned her a Golden Globe and New York Film Critics Circle award, as well as Oscar®, Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice, and Independent Spirit nominations in the Best Actress category. Bening also starred in the critically acclaimed film AMERICAN BEAUTY, for which she won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and a BAFTA Award, and received both an Academy Award® nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. For her role in BEING JULIA, Bening won the Golden Globe and the National Board of Review Award and received an Oscar® and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations.

KATE BECKINSALE – Cinema Vanguard Award, 2016

Kate Beckinsale is an immensely gifted English actress who has proven to be one of the industry’s most versatile and charismatic performers. Beckinsale was most recently seen in the romantic drama Love and Friendship to rave reviews. Directed by Whit Stillman, the period drama is based on Jane Austen’s novel Lady Susan. Starring opposite Chloë Sevigny, the film tells the story of the flirtatious and manipulative ‘Lady Susan Vernon’ (Beckinsale) as she plays matchmaker for herself and her daughter (Morfydd Clark). The actress wrapped production on the fifth installment of the fan favorite sci-fi fantasy, Underworld: Blood Wars, where she reprised her role as the iconic action hero ‘Selene.’ Screen Gems is set to release this on January 6, 2017. On the small screen, Beckinsale’s appearances include A&E’s Emma and One Against the Wind for Hallmark Films. Additionally, the talented actress has played several roles on stage in theater productions such as Clocks & Whistles, Sweetheart, and the British National Touring production of The Seagull. 

JASON MITCHELL – Rising Star Award, 2016

Jason Mitchell has steadily been building a reputation as an actor on the rise and has achieved critical acclaim for his role portraying the iconic “Eazy E” in Universal’s 2015 N.W.A. biopic, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, directed by F. Gary Gray. He won the African American Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor, as well as sharing nominations with his fellow cast mates for Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards. His performance in the film also landed him on New York Times Magazine’s  “Top Ten Performers of the Year” list in 2015.  Read more…

SIMON HELBERG – Auteur Award, 2016

Simon Helberg

Simon Helberg has earned acclaim for his versatile performances on screens both big and small, as well as behind the camera as a writer and director. Helberg most recently received rave reviews for his starring role opposite Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant in Stephen Frears’ “Florence Foster Jenkins.” His scene-stealing role as ‘Cosme McMoon’, accompanist to Florence (as played by Streep) has been called “a revelation” by ROLLING STONE and THE NEW YORK TIMES review stated that he is “the actor you should keep your eye on” as “the tale wouldn’t be half as engaging without Mr. Helberg…” Helberg is perhaps best-known as one of the stars of consistently the biggest comedy series in the world, “The Big Bang Theory.” Read more…
